Keynote Session - Leading at the Speed of Change

Anyone can lead when things are smooth. It’s when the going gets tough that our leadership is truly tested - and most needed. How we respond - as Navigators (capitalizing on changes), Survivors (just getting by), or Victims (living in “Pity City”) - determines our personal and organizational effectiveness. The response of a victim is non-action - “Why bother? There is nothing we can do”.  Survivors respond by saying “someone” should do something.  Navigators respond to tough times by taking action and making it happen. Strong leaders navigate toward high performing teams and organizations by balancing the discipline of systems, processes, and technical skills on a foundation of effective people leadership.

Keynote Session - What's Worth Working For

The challenges of organizing to build social capital for all by increasing social ties and trust between people with disabilities and their fellow citizens can only be met if we commit ourselves to learning. We will think about the leadership work of focusing attention where it really matters and dealing with the difficult issues that arise when we confront the conflicts that arise.

Keynote Session -  Leadership, Decisiveness and Principles

A common complaint concerning poor leadership is that some leaders are much too anxious about making decisions that might alienate others. Consequently, they make decisions that pander to others at the cost of principles.  In doing so, they may place political considerations above their other responsibilities as leaders. This presentation will look at the responsibilities of leaders, the sorts of difficulties they may have with decision-making, the kinds of consequences of leadership weakness around decision-making and the kinds of strategies that will strengthen leadership character and the capability of leaders to rise to leadership rather than to succumb to their weaknesses.

Breakout Session - Leadership and the Leading Edge

Not all leadership challenges relate to acting as a catalyst at the front edge of innovation and change. Nonetheless, there is a place for leadership contributions that bring about leading edge developments. This session will explore the type of issues that such leaders will need to face in order to define leading edge and needed innovations, the strategies that enable these to come into being as well as those that delay rather than bring about needed change and the importance of thoughtful dissent and challenge in the process of discerning and moving past ineffectual approaches to change.

Keynote Session - Success is not a Spectator Sport

We choose to be successful in work and in life the moment we decide to step out of our comfort zone and do whatever it takes to reach our goals. We become a great leader when we take on a mindset of serving and helping people, of building winning and lasting relationships with them, and of being a truly great communicator.

We become exceptional in work and in life when we become fully accountable, make no excuses and take full responsibility for our actions, and when we make a commitment to excellence every day.

Based on Charles’ best selling book and his unforgettable personal story of overcoming adversity and winning against the odds, and his professional experiences as an award winning sales professional, business leader and successful entrepreneur, this dynamic, powerful and high energy presentation will motivate, educate, entertain, inform, challenge and inspire you to ACTION and to unleash that magnificent potential and greatness that lies within.

Having Courageous Conversations

panel facilitated by Bill Allerton, CEO CQL Canada

All people within an organization can and should be empowered to exercise leadership.  In fact people working at the direct service level and their supervisors often can anticipate the unintended (unwanted) consequences of a decision or direction.  A short film will be shown “On The Road To Abilene”. The film is a humorous look at what can happen when people don’t speak up due to fear or because they are afraid they are the only one who feels this way.  A panel made up of progressive organizational leaders will talk about the best approach when you want to raise alarm bells.  The panel will  also discuss approaches that they feel empower them to have courageous conversations in a diplomatic and professional manner. Bill Allerton, CEO, CQL Canada will facilitate the discussion and panel presentations.

Building a Team to Build a Life

Gloria Little and Tammy Robinson, Community Living Algoma

This session will discussed how one lady led her team to support her in a way that made sense to her.  It took one staff member with a vision and the courage to say let’s try this and a support team with the same commitment to finding a place that she could call her own.

Building Social Capital

Marie Benassi, Jamie Curran, Debbie Moffatt, Community Living Mississauga

Social Capital refers to the connection among individuals - social networks and the norms of reciprocity and trustworthiness that arise from them. Social capital refers to the connections and relationships that develop around community and the value these relationships hold for its members. People who enjoy a high level of social capital are more connected to their community and are happier, healthier and live longer.  This session will include information on how Community Living Mississauga’s Quality and Community Development Team is building social capital in the community and the resulting community inclusion for individuals who have an intellectual disability. This session will also highlight how the Quality and Community Development Team provides leadership to their organization as they journey towards building social capital for everyone.
